HEIM, Velma L. (Merchant) Weipert 1941-2001

Velma L. (Merchant) Weipert Heim, age 60 of New Albin, died Jan. 29, 2001 at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI, where she was being treated for cancer.

She was born Jan. 26, 1941 in Mt. Carroll, IL to parents Elmer, Sr. and Mildred (Edwards) Merchant.

Velma married Thomas F. Weipert, Sr. of Lansing June 21, 1958, and five children were born to this union. He preceded her in death in February of 1975.

She then married Donald J. Heim of Lansing June 21, 1989. He had eight children and he also preceded her in death in June of 1997.

In addition to her two husbands, she was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Wilbert, Jerry and Elmer, Jr.; a sister Rhonda; a stepson Gary; and a nephew Jeffery Allan.

Surviving are her five children, Cindy Vanderbilt of Prairie du Chien, WI, Tina (Odie) Killan of Clarksville, TN, Tammy Hammer of Pueblo, CO, Tom Weipert, Jr. of Prairie du Chien, WI, and Trisha (Howard) Jones of Harpers Ferry; seven step-children, Donald (Sharleen) Heim, Jr. of Tripoli, IA, Donna Hager of Lansing, Connie (Tom) Wardenbyrg of Conroy, IA, Steve (Rita) Heim of Lansing, Jean (Charlie)Farley of Cedar Rapids, Ronald (Dorothy) Heim of Lansing, six grandchildren, Sharon, Ben, Terry, Levi, Jeremy and Kyle; one great-grandchild, Joey; twelve step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one foster grandchild.

Also surviving are two sisters, Connie (Richard) Rice of Thompson, IL and Susan (Al) Garcia of Elgin, IL; five sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Kenny) Heereh of Lansing, Carole (Ray) Sickles of Lansing, Verna Heim of Waukon, Rosemary (Douglas) Dill of CA, and Florence (Alfred) Olson of Waukon; one brother-in-law Lee Weipert of AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing, with Rev. Henry Grant officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in New Albin.

Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home of Lansing assisted the family.
