Gertrude Eugenia Darling, 90, of New Albin, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Thornton Manor Care Center, Lansing, Iowa. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 9, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin. Fr. Hank Charipar will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the New Albin Town House in New Albin.

Gertrude Eugenia Darling was born Dec. 24, 1909, to John (Jake) Ghelfi and Jenny (Curti) Ghelfi in New Albin. She married Vernon Darling on Oct. 22, 1928, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, where she was a member of the Rosary Soci ety and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She was a lifelong resident of New Albin and an avid Democrat. She was a resident of Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing the past four and a half years, where she received excellent care, for which the family is forever grateful.

She is survived by two daughters, Lorna (Alfred) Smerud of La Crosse and Joan (Henry) Metzdorff of Mackinaw, Ill.; one son, Brent (Shirley ) Darling of Lansing; one sister, Mable (Frank) Laylan of Genoa, Wis.; one brother, Earl (Doris) Ghelfi of De Soto, Wis.; nine grand children; and 16 great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon on March 24, 1986; one sister, Delia Dohlin Fredrickson; two grandsons; one great-grand son; and many nieces and nephews.

The Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, Lansing, is in charge of arrangements.
