Gladys Ryan, 96, of New Albin, passed away Monday, July 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Waukon.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin, with Fr. Hank Charipar officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in New Albin. Casketbearers were Larry Donahue, Ray Whalen, Steve Mohwinkle, Dean Hartley, Dale Donahue and Mike Hartley. The Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home was in charge of arraangements.
Gladys was born June 2, 1903, to parents Patrick and Mary (Fish) Ryan in New Albin. She was the third child in a family of 12 children. She grew up and attended school in the New Albin area. After graduating, she pursued her B.S. in Elementary Education and proceeded to teach in the New Albin and Caledonia schools for more than 50 years. Gladys never married but devoted herself to her family, teaching the young children of the area, and being an integral member of the Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Marian Hartley and Loretta Spinner; and 15 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
