Spanish War Veteran Dies
Lansing Man Saw Sinking of Maine
LANSING, Ia. ---(Special)--- Gustave Schulze, 70, Spanish-American war veteran who was present at the sinking of the Maine, died suddenly Wednesday night at his home in Lansing after an illness of one day.

During the Spanish-American war, Schulze served with troop B, Fifth cavalry, in Havana and Puerto Rico.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Schulze, he was born in Lansing Aug. 29, 1879. He was married to Gertrude Dee Oct. 14, 1909, and they had nine children, all of whom survive with the exception of Edward, who died when young.

Schulze spent his entire life in Lansing with the exception of two years in California. He worked four years as a railroad firemen (sic) and more recently as a painter and paperhanger.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Marvin and William, Lansing, John, Royal Oak, Mich., and Harris, Sioux City, Ia.; four daughters, Mrs. Rita Troendle and Mrs. Gladys Troendle, Lansing, Mrs. Helen Bakenhus, Anaheim, Calif., and Mrs. Myrna Donohue, Garden Grove, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and one brother, William, Spokane, Wash.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending word from relatives on the west coast. Services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic church with burial in Oak Hill cemetery. The body is at Schneider Funeral home in Lansing.
