Car Skids, Overturns; Lansing Restaurant Operator Is Killed

LANSING, Ia. --(Special)-- The body of John Casey, 35-year-old Lansing Restaurant operator, was found near his ditched and overturned convertible on STH 9 five miles west of Lansing about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday.

As Casey was alone at the time, details of the accident are not clear, but it is believed he failed to make a sharp turn due to ice on the road at a point in the highway at the foot of Stirn hill.

According to Sheriff William Huffman of Allamakee county, who, with Coroner Pateman investigated the accident, the Casey car was resting on its top and the lights still burning at about 3 a.m. The coroner put the time of death at about 2:45 a.m., attributing it to concussion or some other internal injury.

Two Lansing youths, Tommy Thornton and Lyle Snitker, discovered the accident almost immediately after it had happened.

Sheriff Huffman said no inquest is planned. It was Lansing's first auto fatality in more than a year.

Casey, a veteran of World war II, was born in Lansing Oct. 6, 1914. His father died just a year ago, Jan. 27, 1949.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Tom Casey, Lansing; and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Foster, Chicago, Mrs. John Boylan, Flint, Mich., and Mrs. Joe Dunlevy, also of Lansing.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
