JOHNSON

At about 12 o'clock last Tuesday night, the wife of Israel Johnson arose from her bed and went in search of her husband. She found him in his shoe shop adjoining the house, sitting in a chair. What was her surprise on going up to him to find him dead. He had died without a struggle, apparently, as he sat there like one in repose.

He had been about the house as usual through the day, and did a little work in the garden in the evening. Heart disease was most probably the cause of death.

Deceased was born in Sweden in June, 1828, and was therefore 68 years of age. Came to America in 1849, was married in Lansing in 1860, removing to Rock Island, and came to Lansing again in 1866. He has resided here since. He made an overland trip to California, going from Rock Island, and spending some time there.

He leaves a family of four daughters and two sons, all grown.

It is not our wish or intention to write of the shortcoming of deceased. True, he had his faults, and who has not? But were we to speak of his better qualities, it is with confidence we express the opinion that they would far overbalance his failings. Funeral to-day at 8:00 p.m. May his soul rest in peace.
