Postville Herald, Thur., 15 Mar. 1934.

Carl John Schultz was born March 13, 1848, in Wendish Wehningen, Germany, being the second oldest in a family of eight children. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed at the age of 14 years.

At the age of 21 he was called to the colors for his German fatherland in the Franco-German War of 1870-71, until honorably discharged.

On the 18th of January, 1878, he was united in marriage with Friedericka Wilke of (looks like Doemitz). This union was blessed with three children, two of whom, a son and a daughter, died in early childhood.

At the age of 36 years he, together with his family, wife and daughter, left the fatherland and emigrated to the United States. They came to Iowa and established their new home in Postville, where he has lived continuously since.

In 1891 his wife died and for a number of years he made his home with his brother John and wife. After the marriage of his only daughter (Mrs. Geo. Welzel) he made his home with her where he has been lovingly cared for the past 31 years.

He enjoyed good health to a ripe old age, but of late his strength began to fail him. And on last Wednesday afternoon about 1:30, while taking a walk, the final summons came and without pain or struggle he was called to his eternal home, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 23 days.

He was a loving father and grandfather, an honorable and upright man and citizen, who will be sadly missed by many friends and dear ones.

He was a faithful communicant member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of this city.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Welzel; one sister, Mrs. Minna Renzman; one brother, Aug. Schultz, all of Postville; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in this city on Saturday afternoon March 10th, Dr. R. B. Garten officiating. Interment was made in the Postville Cemetery.
