Martha Vold 1903-2003

Martha N. Vold, 100, of Waukon, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, September 22 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements. Martha was born April 12, 1903, on the Paint Creek Township farm of her parents, William and Nicolena (Leikvold) Rood. She was baptized and confirmed at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church and attended rural area schools. On November 16, 1927, she married Helmer Vold in Decorah. Martha and Helmer farmed together in Paint Creek Township until his death in the late 1950s, after which she moved to Waukon. Martha was an active member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church and its Ladies Circles. She was also a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center, where she has lived since the early 1990s. She was a hard worker, enjoyed gardening and taking care of her house, and loved to visit with family and friends. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Helmer; four brothers, Paul, Ove, Eddie, and Norman Rood; and a sister, Martha Katinka.
Casketbearers were Daryl Hansmeier, Jay Johnson, Elmo and Erik Hagen, Eddy Knuppe, and Sigurd Ness.
