Helen L. Gericke 1915-2003

Helen Lydia Gericke was born April 23, 1915 on the rural Waukon farm of her parents, Fred and Clara (Ludeking) Opfer. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ, attended rural elementary schools, and graduated from Waukon High School. October 1, 1937 she married Cloy H. Gericke in Cresco. They farmed together in the rural Postville and Rossville areas until retiring and moving to Waukon in 1982. Helen was involved in many aspects of the farm, but particularly enjoyed tending to the calves and chickens and raising a very large garden. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewed items of all kinds, and also did knitting and quilting. Helen was a long-time member of Zion United Church of Christ and its Ladies Organizations. Helen died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial of ashes was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Survivors include three daughters, Janice Gericke of San Francisco, CA, Celia (David) Hollmann of Monona, and Mary (Larry) Munro of Janesville, WI; two sons, Robert and Roger, both of Waukon; and nine grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cloy; a grandson, Alex Munro; a sister, Irma Sande; and four brothers, Paul, Albert, Carl, and Clarence Opfer.
