HENRY HERMAN LUDEKING
Henry Herman Ludeking was born in Union Prairie township, Allamakee county, Iowa, near Waukon, November 26th, 1870, and died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Henry Carter, in Waukon, February 7, 1917, aged 46 years, 2 months and 11 days.
He was educated in the country school near his home and then he fitted himself for teaching, attending school at Decorah, Iowa. But opportunity opening before him on other lines, he never taught.
He entered the store of Mr. R. J. Alexander in 1891, clerking there for seventeen years, or until December 31, 1908. since that time he has been mainly connected with the Waukon Shoe Store, though other enterprises have received his attention.
He was united in marriage with Miss Martha Barkemper on January 17th, 1899, but their married life was short, Mrs. Ludeking passing to the beyond on March 21st, 1904. Since that time Mr. Ludeking has made his home with his sister.
He leaves one son, Leslie, his aged mother now 82 years old, three brothers and two sisters, Aldrich, of Woden, Iowa, George and Thomas of this county, Miss Minnie with the mother at the old homestead, and Mrs. Henry Carter, of Waukon.
Mr. Ludeking was confirmed in the Zalmona Presbyterian church in Ludlow, but did not hold membership in that church. For years after coming to Waukon he attended the Presbyterian church and Sabbath school and has always been friendly to that church. A few days before his death he sent for the pastor and asked him to preach his funeral telling him that the end was near.
The funeral services were held at the home of his brother-in-law, Henry Carter, conducted by Rev. Van Nice, assisted by Rev. Fledderjohan, pastor of the German Reformed church, the German choir furnishing the music.
