On Sunday, October 24, 2004, Amy C. Meyer Harris of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away at the Bethesda Naval Hospital after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Ray Harris, Captain UHPHS Ret. and the mother of Ramona Chamberlain of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her grandchildren are Deborah Chitkara of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Cynthia Armstrong of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Anne Kelsey of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Amy was the great-grandmother of 10 and the great-great grandmother of one. She was the sister of Ruth M. Lenth of Postville, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bertha (Krambeer) Meyer, her sisters Hilda M. Martins, Ethel Meyer, and Leona M. Bachtell and a brother Lorence Meyer. Services will be held at Pumphrey's Bethesda-Chevy Chase Funeral Home on Sunday October 31 and further services and interment will be held in Postville, Iowa on Thursday November 4.

NOTE: The obituary did not give a birthdate but on the Postville Cemetery records compiled by Dale Woodmansee for Allamakee County, she is listed as being born in 1908. Her death date is not inscribed since the records were published prior to her death.

Amy Caroline Emma (Meyer) Harris, died of pneumonia Sunday, October 24, 2004, in the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland. A
visitation will begin at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 4, 2004 at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville until 1:30 p.m. when a committal
service will be held at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Postville Cemetery. A time of fellowship will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church Dining Room in Postville. A service was held Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at the Plumbers Funeral Home in Bethesda, MD. Survivors include a daughter, Ramona Chamberlain of Cedar Rapids, a
sister, Ruth (Harvey) Lenth, Postville, IA, three granddaughters, Deborah (Madan) Chitkara of Gaithersburg, MD, Cynthia (Paul) Armstrong
of Mount Vernon and Anne Kelsey of Colorado Springs, CO; 10 great grandchildren, including her special great granddaughter, Malina, a
great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Capt. Robert R. Harris, U.S. Public Health Service, a brother, Lawrence Meyer, three
sisters, Ethel, Leona (Bob) Bachtell, and Hilda (John) Martins, and a granddaughter, Karen Chamberlain.

She was born Nov. 21, 1908, on a farm in Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Krambeer Meyer. On April 7, 1928 Amy married
Robert Ray Harris. They both graduated from Postville High School.

To this union one child, Ramona, was born. Amy and Robert lived for many years in Louisville, KY, Portland, OR, and Bethesda, MD. They were
also stationed in San Jose, Costa Rica, Beirut, Lebanon and New Delhi, India, for several years.
Amy was a volunteer for the Red Cross, Salvation Army and was a Gray Lady at NIH for many years. She was a member of the Bethesda Women's Club and held many offices in the Public Health Service Women's groups.

She was a true matriarch of her family. She loved entertaining friends, traveling, bridge, excellent cuisine, chocolate and living life to the fullest. Amy was a generous, loving, Christian woman who always focused on the positive. She will be greatly missed.

Donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice or the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa.
