Postville Herald, Thur., 21 April 1921. (condensed).

Fred H. Welzel died at his home in Postville, Iowa, April 18, 1921. The record of his life lies between this date and October 9, 1858. Although he had been in ill health during the past five years his death came suddenly and unexpectedly to his family and friends.

Fred was the second son of of Mr. and Mrs. John Welzel and his birth place was on the Judge Williams farm: the family living there at that time. The old Welzel farm in Grand Meadow was purchased in 1864 and was subsequently the family home where Fred's boyhood years were passed. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church. When a young man Fred took a commercial course at Fayette, Iowa, and was employed for a number of years as book-keeper in the general store of F. W. Roberts. While there, through an accident, he lost his right arm.

June 3, 1885, Fred H. Welzel and Miss Mate Orr were united in marriage, and Postville has since been their home. Their only child, a son, died in infancy.

As successors to Leithold Bros., a firm consisting of Henry Schultz, Carl Holter and Fred Welzel came into possession of the general store; the stock was subsequently divided, Fred taking over the shoe department, and he conducted the business in the Webster building on Lawler street for a short time. In 1898 Mr. Welzel went into the Postville State Bank as an assistant, where he was employed eighteen years, in connection with his work there he was Secretary of the Postville Farmer's Co-Operative Creamery Co. for a number of years. Later, and up to the present time, he has been engaged in a successful insurance business.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias fraternity, Turner Society and the Modern Woodmen of America.

All in all, his word and deed were those which make for good homes and citizenship, and as such an individual Mr. Welzel will be missed, but remembered, in this community where he has been so long and so favorably known.

He is survived by his wife, three brothers- John, Conrad and George Welzel; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Staadt, all of this place.

Beautiful floral tributes from friends were much in evidence at the funeral, which was held from the Community church at two o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. A. Saathoff. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
