John B. Hart, son of Abram and Mary Hart, was born at Postville, Iowa, June 6, 1859, and died at a hospital in Los Angeles, Cal., March 23, 1918, aged 58 years, 9 months and 17 days, death resulting from a stroke of apoplexy with which he had been stricken three days previously.

June 22, 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida M. Humphreys at Postville, Iowa. This union was blessed with five children- Pearl of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Nellie Brown of Atlantic, Iowa; Charles Hart of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Ruth Dlowhy of Atlanta, Ga.; and Verla of Los Angeles, Cal.- who, with the mother and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Holland of New York City, survive him.

In December, 1911, Mr. Hart and his family broke the tender ties of friendships that had been formed during a continuous residence here, dating from his birth, and left for Los Angeles to make his home. With the exception of the few years intervening since then Mr. Hart's life has been an open book to the people of Postville and vicinity.

During his residence here Mr. Hart was at different engaged in business of various kinds, such as the city dairy and milk line, meat market, furniture and undertaking. He was also president of the Postville State Bank for many years and manager of the Postville Farmers Co-Operative Society from the time of its organization until his leaving for California. For six terms- three consecutive terms at two different periods- he served this city as its Mayor alike with credit to himself and honor to the community.

Fraternally he was associated with Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 A.F. & A.M., Unity Chapter No. 62 R.A.M. and Oak Camp No. 328 M.W.A., all of this city, being a charter member of the last named society and holder of a $3000. beneficiary certificate in same.

He was a genial, jovial, generous man of many good qualities of head and heart. He was lavish with his family, liberal with his friends and loyal to his home town and community, and from his abundant means made many a contribution to the relief of the needy and distressed.

His remains were shipped to Postville and on Easter Sunday afternoon at two o'clock the funeral was held from the Turner Opera House, conducted by the Masonic fraternity, Rev. J. F. Childress opening the service with a prayer and Robert Thompson of Cresco officiating for the Masons, after which interment was made in the family plot in Postville cemetery.
