Postville Review, Fri., 12 March 1915.

James Sams was born in Ripley county, Indiana, Jan. 31, 1834, where he grew to manhood. He passed away at his home near Postville, Allamakee Co., Iowa, March 8, 1915, at the ripe old age of 81 years, 2 months and 23 days.

He was married to Charlotte Cordelia Folsom Feb. 1, 1860, near Versailles, Indiana, and came to Iowa in the fall of 1865, settling in Winneshiek County. In October 1884 he moved onto the farm northwest of Postville where he resided until called to his reward.

February first of this year Mr. Sams had the misfortune to slip on the icy walk, resulting in a broken hip, which with other complications caused his death. He was a man of industrious habits, honest and upright in all his dealings, an ideal husband and father, neighbor and friend. Mr. Sams never united with any church but was a firm believer in the Bible and Christianity.

The children have the sympathy of the entire countryside in their affliction which is doubly sad, having been called to part with both mother and father within a period of little more than ten weeks. May the God of their father and mother be their consolation.

The funeral was held from the Congregational church in Postville at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. F. Childress officiating. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
