At about ten o'clock yesterday morning, after a little more than two weeks of failing health, C. J. Meier passed peacefully away at the home of his son A. L. Meier in this city aged 86 years, three months and 18 days, death resulting from no specific cause other than the infirmities incident to age. Deceased was born in Destel, Westphalia, Germany, May 13, 1825, coming to America in 1845 and locating in Cincinnatti, Ohio, where he followed his trade of shoemaker for a period of five years. In 1850 he came to Iowa, settling on a farm near National, Clayton Co., where he and his good wife labored long and faithfully and raised a family of nine children, four of whom, C. W., John H. and A. L. of this city, and Chas. F. Meier of Farmersburg, survive, the other five having gone before. About twenty-two years ago, wearied with their years of toil, they came to Postville to reside. Six years ago the wife and mother crossed over the Harbor Bar, since which time he has made his home with his children, who have faithfully ministered to his every comfort with tenderest care.

The passing of Mr. Meier marks the closing of a long and useful life. He was an honorable and upright christian gentleman, an affectionate and kind husband and father, a worthy citizen and warm friend, who in the fullness of years has gone to the reward that awaits the pure in heart in the paradise of God.

Deceased was a member of the German Lutheran church of this city from which the funeral will be held tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 1 o'clock.
