Postville Review, Sat., 2 March 1878.
In Memoriam.
Some of the brightest and best of our earthly treasure have been taken to the land of the blest. Among them is Lettie, daughter of A. and Josie Gorham. She died Feb. 20th, 1878, aged 4 years 2 months and 27 days.
While many have suffered severe during the prevalence of the dreadful disease that has been among us for the last few months, none have equalled Lettie's continuance. She was a great suffer the most of the time, 50 days, first with diphtheria, then kidney complaint and the dropsy. Much of the time she had no rest day or night. During this time the parents with the aid of the physicians and friends fought disease, and warded off death, but the grim monster finally triumphed.
This triumph however is only o'er the body, for the redeemed spirit rests with its Savior, and the triumph over the body shall be short, "for I shall come up at the last day, and be made immortal."
When Lettie was two years old she would go on errands to the neighbors, and would go alone and trade at the store at the age of three. She was matured in thought beyond her years, and would talk of death, of Jesus and of heaven, as would be expected only of those of riper years. She took great pleasure in singing of Jesus and the angels, and in her last hours nothing seemed to soothe her but the singing of her favorite songs, such as "I am so glad that Jesus loves me." and "I want to be an angel."
Dear Brother and Sister, in your sorrow draw comfort from the thought that the dear Jesus of whose love our Lettie delighted to sing, has taken her to himself, and made her an angel, "Neither will she die any more."
"One little lamb from all sorrow free,
Through the long years of eternity,
From the heart of summer,
And winters cold,
is waiting for you,
In the upper fold."-----------------
