Postville Review, Fri., 9 June 1916.

Orison Clark Hinman was born in New York state April 1827, and died at his home in Hardin, Allamakee county, Iowa, about midnight Saturday, June 3, 1916, aged eighty-nine years, one month and 16 days.

He was fifth in a family of thirteen children of John and Polly Hinman. It is a noteworthy fact that from his father's birth in 1792 to his own death in 1916 the two generations span a period of 124 years.

August 18, 1851, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Patterson and to this union seven children were born, all of whom grew to manhood and womenhood, namely; Mrs. Emma Nichols and Mrs. Ada Matthews of Portland, Oregon; Charles, who preceded his father in death by but a few weeks; Orison of Silver City, New Mexico; George and Will near Luana and Mrs. Eva Candee near Postville.

He is survived by his aged wife, six children, twenty grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

He was one of the oldest residents of this section, having brought his family to Monona in 1854, and for 62 years he has been a honored and respected citizen of Clayton and Allamakee counties. He united with the church in 1879 and remained faithful consistent. His life was quiet, but all who knew him held him in high esteem. He was best known and most appreciated by a small circle of his nearest friends and relatives.

The death of Clark Hinman marks the passing of the last of the pioneer residents of the vicinity of Hardin. He had lived to see that once thriving village of the early days dwindle down to a memory and the land it once occupied turned back into farms. He had seen his old friends of the earlier years one by one pass over to the other shore until he alone was left. And at last, he too, wearied with the weight of four score years and nine, fell into that dreamless sleep and joined the innumerable caravan that has passed from Time into Eternity.

He was an honest, honorable and upright man, a Christian gentleman, who throughout a long and (words blurred) good deeds and kindly acts along his pathway and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. Measured by his accumilation of worldly possessions his life was not a success, but when measured by the love and respect and good will of his fellow men, which in reality are the only things worth while, he was blessed abundantly and as but few men are. And he leaves to his family as a priceless heritage that rather to be chosen that riches - a good name.

The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved family, and especially to the kind and faithful wife whose heart is heavy with a sorrow it is beyond our ken to know or our power to assuage.

The funeral was held from the Hardin M.E. church at 10:30 on Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. P. M. Phillips of Postville. Six of his grandchildren officiated as pall bearers. Interment in Hardin cemetery.

In this connection the family wish to thank the neighbors and friends for their kindly assistance and sympathy during the illness and after the death of their beloved husband and father.
