Postville Herald, Thur., 20 Aug. 1925.

On Sunday last, while janitor Gustave Kuhse of St. Paul's Lutheran church was arranging the song numbers to be used during the services in the rack, he had the misfortune to fall from the chair on which he was standing striking in such a manner as to fracture several ribs. He is resting comfortably but has a pretty sore side. Later -- It has developed that Mr. Kuhse also sustained serious internal injuries in his fall, the heart being affected and a blood clot forming. Yesterday afternoon he entered a state of coma, which condition is still present this morning and gravest fears are entertained as to the outcome as Mr. Kuhse is past 72 years of age.

Postville Herald, Thur., 27 Aug. 1925.

Thursday evening last Gustave Kuhse, just south of Postville, was called to his heavenly home at about six o'clock, his death following complication resulting from a fall from a chair in St. Paul's Lutheran church the Sunday evening previous while in performance of his duties as janitor, mention of which was made in last weeks issue of this paper.

Gustave Kuhse was born in Wegezin, Kreis Anklam, vor Pommern, Germany, December 18, 1854, and died Thursday, August 20, 1925, aged 70 years, eight months and two days. After his marriage in 1883 he and his wife emigrated to America settling first in Chicago and a year later came to Guttenberg, Iowa, where his wife died. May 20, 1895, he was united in marriage with Lena Radloff and located on a farm near Clayton Center, where they resided until 1910, at which time they came to Postville and have resided here continually since.

For the past eleven years Mr. Kuhse had been sexton and caretaker of Postville cemetery and his work was well and faithfully done. For some time past he served as janitor of St. Paul's church, receiving the injuries leading to his demise while in pursuit of his duties as such.

He is survived by his grief-stricken widow, one daughter, Mrs. Martha Fascher of Farmersburg; one son, Gustav Kuhse of Volga City; one foster daughter, Mrs. Fred Meyer and one brother, Albert Kuhse of Postville; one sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Repsien of Germany and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons of a former marriage.

Mr. Kuhse was an honest, upright Christian man, a good citizen and neighbor and held high esteem by all who knew him.

The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city last Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. T. Finck, and the large assembly of sorrowing friends and the profuse and beautiful floral offerings amply attested the high esteem in which deceased was held. Interment in Postville cemetery.
