Albert John Henry Backhaus
Albert John Henry Backhaus, the son of John and Mary (Mueller) Backhaus, was born at Luana, Iowa on January 4, 1891. He was baptized at the Ceres Church in Garnavillo township on March 5, 1891. He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana on April 8, 1906. On July 16, 1961 he suffered a stroke and was taken to the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville, and passed away early in the morning of July 17 at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 13 days.
He was married to Alice Christofferson at Elkader on December 12, 1928. To this union were born 2 children, Marilyn and John. The couple farmed in Grand Meadow township all of their lives, and were planning to make their home in Postville in the very near future.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother who died in infancy; and one grandson, Dennis Lee Ellis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Ellis.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Marilyn, Mrs. Darwin Ellis, of Luana; one son, John, of Postville; his step-mother, Mrs. John Backhaus, of Postville; one sister, Amanda, Mrs. Alvin Johanningmeier, of Monona; 3 half-sisters, Florence, Mrs. Henry Christofferson of Monona; Viola, Mrs. Louis Miller of Luana; and Marie, Mrs. Elmer Schutte of Postville; one half-brother, Arno, of Postville; one grandson, Randy Ellis of Luana; 2granddaughters, Darla Jean Ellis of Luana, and Jackie Dawn Backhaus of Postville; one step-brother, Verni Engle of Clermont, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Postville on Wednesday, July 19, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles E. Witt, officiating. Burial was at the Postville Cemetery.
