John Schafer
John Schafer died at his home in Center township, Jan. 21st, 1901, after an illness of several weeks with dropsy. He was born Dec. 28, 1828, at Onack, Kreis Lanterbach, Hessan, Germany. Was married Feb. 20, 1855, to Anna Dorothea Hauser and came to Allamakee county, Oct. 2, 1866. Mr. Schafer was the father of thirteen children of which ten survive, six sons and four daughters, namely: Mrs. Schneider of Elon; George, of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Tanner, of Winona; John and Carl of Minneapolis; Henry, Mrs. Fred Bartheld and Wm., of this place and Fred and Mary at home. All were present at the funeral except two. He also leaves a wife and a brother V.W., of this city. The funeral occurred Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., from the family home, Rev. Urbach officiating. Interment at the German cemetery on Lansing Ridge. Deceased was a member of the A.O.U.W.
