Obituary – Gilchrist

On the 10th Mr. Geo. Albert made us acquainted with the fact that John J. Gilchrist of Waukon had died in the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago the day before, but the matter escaped our attention until seeing the notice of death in the Waukon papers. He was a very well known resident of the county, and the following well prepared obituary copied from the Republican will be read with interest:

John Jacob Gilchrist was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, January 25, 1818, and died in Chicago, December 9, 1900, being 52 years, 10 months 15 days of age. He came to Iowa with his parents in Union City township, this county, in 1864.

In 1871 he removed to Kansas where he resided three years and then returned to his old home in Union City. January 15, 1872, he was united in marriage with Agnes Beardmore. Two children were the fruits of this union, Sarah Elizabeth, who died in Waukon November 2, 1893, and Harry B. at present in New Mexico.

His wife died September 10, 1893, and he was again married in April, 1894, to Miss Ella Nesmith in Waukon.

When 22 years of age he became a member of Mt. Hope Presbyterian church and joined the M.E. church in Waukon June 18, 1895. He was made a mason in Waukon Lodge No. 154 September 31, 1894, which lodge took part in the services and escorted the remains to the cemetery, where the services were conducted by the fraternity.

Mr. Gilchrist was of unassuming and retiring manners and those who have known him longest knew him best. He is survived by wife, father, mother, brother, W.T., and one son, Harry B.

The sorrowing relatives have the consoling satisfaction of knowing that John J. was honored and respected by all, and they have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement, and may God bless and comfort the aged parents.
