The Rev. Father Thomas Hancock Campbell, age 77, of Hinesville, Ga., formerly of Waukon, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in a Hinesville hospital following a brief illness with cancer. Services were held Monday, June 9 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Rev. Fr. Joseph Schneider and Msgr. Edward Lechtenberg concelebrating. Burial was in the priest section of Mount Olivet Cemetery, with military honors. A wake service was also held at St. Stephen's Church in Hinesville on June 4. Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon, assisted the family with arrangements. Father Campbell was born in Waukon to Leonard and Hazel Campbell on April 18, 1926. He attended St. Patrick School and Waukon Public School, Loras College in Dubuque (1960-1962), and Sacred Heart Monastery, Hales Corner, Wis. (1974-1979), earning a master's in religion. His ordination to the priesthood was June 7, 1980, at the Cathedral in Savannah, Ga., by Bishop Raymond Lessard.
Father Campbell was assigned to the following parishes: St. Joseph Church, Macon, Ga.; St. Joseph Church, Jesup, Ga.; St. Christopher Church, Bagley, Ga.; St. Ann Church, Columbus, Ga.; Pucelli Catholic School, Columbus, Ga.; and Blessed Sacrament Church, Savannah, Ga. Before his ordination, he taught at the following schools in Iowa: St. Joseph, Marion; St. John, Independence; Holy Ghost, Dubuque, and St. Patrick, Waukon. At the time of his death, Father Campbell was associate chaplain at the chapel at Fort Stewart, Our Lady of Victory parish, and Winn Army Hospital in Hinesville. He was also associate chaplain at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga. Survivors include his adopted mother, Betty Hancock of Hinesville; three brothers, James (Maxine) of Waukon, Paul (Rita) of Overland Park, Kan., and Charles (Shari) of North Liberty; four sisters, Mary (Dale) Goltz and Esther, both of Waukon, Barbara (Emmett) Magner of Cedar Rapids and Margaret (Tony) Corneliuson of Hopkins, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Hazel Campbell; four brothers, Michael, Mark, William, and John; and two sisters, Hazel Burke and Kathryn Mohwinkle. Father has requested no flowers. He would prefer Masses or donations to the Nazareth Home for Unwed Mothers (Father Campbell helped open this home.), PO Box 204, Macon GA 31202 or Friends of St. Patrick School, 101 Second St. SW, Waukon IA 52172.
