Willard K. Grotegut, 79, of Waukon, died suddenly Thursday, June 12, 2003, at his home in rural Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, June 16 at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon with Rev. Judy Scheer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, assisted the family with arrangements. Willard Kenneth was born January 17, 1924, in Frankville Township, the son of Rueben and Nora (Saak) Grotegut. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended the rural "Southwest Bell School". On August 15, 1943, he married Esther Ellingson at Salem United Church of Christ parsonage. Willard and Esther had a dairy farm and did general dairy farming together for many years. He also raised horses and took great pride in them. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and took care of the church cemetery for several years. Willard also served on the board of education for the Southwest Bell School. He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking care of his cats and dogs, mushroom hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. Survivors include three daughters, Diane (Gene) Brown of Albuquerque, N.M., Ann (Neil) Krumme and Wendy (Mike) Kimber, both of Waukon; two sons, Randy and Gary (Debra) Grotegut, both of Waukon; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother, Roger. Casketbearers were Justin and Josh Grotegut; David Dougherty; Neil Krumme; Mike, Devon, and Zach Kimber; Gene Brown; and Darren Burroughs.
