Funeral services for Vernita W. Welch, age 86, were held Saturday, June 30 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, Iowa. Father Ed Lechtenberg conducted the 10 a.m. services with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lycurgus in Allamakee County, Iowa. Hanson funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were grandson, Keith Welch, Kevin Welch, Josh Welch, Ryan Welch, Curtis Welch, Mark Davis, Morry Welch, and Matt Welch.

Vernita, daughter of William and Kathryn (McLaughlin) Waters, was born June 30, 1903 in Dorchester, Iowa. She attended Normal Training School in Dubuque, Iowa. She married Thomas J. Welch on May 19, 1926 in Dorchester, Iowa. She was a teacher and homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lycurgus Rosary Society, and Upper Iowa Saddle Club.

Vernita W. Welch died Wednesday, June 27, 1990 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; a son Leo Welch; 3 sisters, Mary Murphy, Kathryn Zoll, and Ceal Mahoney and a brother, John Waters.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Darlene (Les) Larson of Elk Grove, Illinois and Annette (John) Waldron of Marion, Iowa; 5 sons, Harold Welch, and Dale Welch of Waukon, Iowa, Richard Welch of Central City, Iowa and Clair Welch and Earl Welch of LaCrescent, Minnesota; 46 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
