George Huebner

George John Huebner, son of Charles and Anna (Walther) Huebner, was born September 19, 1910 on a farm south of Postville, Iowa. He died Monday, February 19, 1996 in the Eastern Star home in Decorah, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. He was 85 years old.

He was baptized on November 20, 1910 by the Reverend Kuhne and confirmed on August 31, 1924 by the Reverend Schmidt, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He attended the country schools near his home and graduated from Postville High School in 1929. In 1930 George went to Chicago to attend the Coyne Electrical School to learn to repair radios and TVs.

On August 21, 1933 George was married to Dorothy Evelyn Hale at the Presbyterian Church office in Waterloo, Iowa. To this union, a daughter, Kathryn, was born. After living in various towns, the couple moved to Postville in 1939. Since that time, they lived in the Decorah, Elkader and Fort Dodge areas and then returned to Postville. George purchased the Home Oil Company in 1954, which he operated for 21 years, along with selling and repairing radios and TVs. George was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and had served on the council for four years. He had been a member of the American Legion since 1944, serving as Commander, as well as other offices. His memberships also included the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, a charter member of the Postville Historical Society, and past president of the Tri-City Golf Club. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Postville since 1974 and had served as the Grand Master. He was also a member of the Scottish and York rites and the Shrine Clown unit.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy who died in 1992; step-brothers and sister from his father's first marriage with Huldah Seaman, Rudy and Henry Huebner and Anna (Mrs. John Gruel, Sr.) and step-brothers from his mother's first marriage, Fred and William Miller. Also from the marriage of his parents, three children who died in childhood and a brother, Carl Huebner.

Surviving is his daughter, Kathryn (George) Brainard of Luana, three granddaughters, Ann Hageman of Ft. Atkinson, Susan Brink of Waukon and Teresa (Dan) Becker of Elgin; nine great-grandchildren, Daniel and Elissa Hageman, Andrew Eberling, Ashley, Allison and Austin Brink, Elizabeth, Brandon and Brittney Becker; two brothers-in-law, Stanley (Charlotte) Hale of Edgerton, Wisc. and Richard (Marjorie) Hale of Cedar Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Ardith (Dale) Condry of Anamosa and Genny Hale of Platteville, Wis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 21, 1996 at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Wayne H. Hagen officiated. Casket bearers were members of the Shrine Clown Unit - Leo Christofferson, C.J. "Ernie" Brandt, Bill Christofferson, Tim Christofferson, Thomas J. Crilly III, Scott Sindelar, Elmer Alderdyce, Ed Coobs, Lee Voshell, R. "Jack" Hager, Willet Miller, Steve Sindelar, Marvin Berg, Robert Gruhn, Gus Bergan, Sam Hofer, Gordon Pape and Lyle Westby. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery, where military honors were provided by the Arthur F. Brandt American Legion Post.
