Ralph R. Helming

Ralph R. Helming, son of Paul and Lydia Flage Helming, was born January 22, 1918 on his parents Ludlow Township farm where he lived his entire life. He died January 10, 1995 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. He was 76 years old.

He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. He attended Ludlow #2 rural elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1937. He attended Waukon Junior College for one year.

Ralph farmed the family farm until retiring in 1981. He continued to live on the farm. In addition to farming, he also hauled cream both with horses and by truck. He belonged to Zalmona Presbyterian Church and served on its cemetery board. He was also a former member of BPOE in Decorah. Ralph was very social and enjoyed spending time visiting with people. In more recent years he enjoyed traveling and took several bus trips throughout the U.S. He also liked watching game shows and sports on television.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two sisters, Alice Huffman of Waukon and Mrs. Durwood (Dona) Schutta of Mesa, Ariz. Also surviving are a niece, Jean Krueger of Waterloo, nephews, Paul Huffman of Waukon and Joel Schutta of Phoenix, Ariz. and grandnieces Lyn, Darci, and Andrea Krueger.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 13, 1995 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Lawrence Odegard officiated. Honorary casket bearers were Ben Krueger, Dave Flage, Dale Hesse, John Adam, Joe Tysland, Edward Opfer and Ralph Hansmeier. Casket bearers were Mark Miller, Robert Stuckman, Joel Schutta, Joe Bakke, Boyd Groezinger, Don Henningsgaard. Arrangements were made by Martin Funeral Home of Waukon. Burial was in the Zalmona Cemetery, rural Waukon.
