Emma Henning

Emma (Grotegut) Henning, daughter of Fredrick and Wilhelmina (Stock) Grotegut, was born January 20, 1894 in Waukon, Iowa. She died February 22, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. She was 102 years old.

Emma attended rural area schools. On November 26, 1914 she was married to Theodore Henning in Ludlow Township. She farmed 34 years on the Henning homestead in Ludlow. She and Theodore moved to Frankville in 1948. From 1969 to 1983 she lived with family in Postville and Waukon and has been at Good Samaritan Center since 1983. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and its ladies organizations. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, sewing and other handiwork. She was an excellent cook and baker and also loved children and enjoyed babysitting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore on October 6, 1969; two sons, Reuben in 1987 and Irvin in 1985; brothers, Edward, Simon, Albert and John Grotegut and sisters, Martha Snitker, Mabel Heins, Lydia Lundt and Mary Herman.

Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Lorraine and Harlan Koenig of Postville, Gertrude and Robert Hagen of Waterville, Betty and Virgil Opfer of Waukon; three sons and their wives, Lawrence and Helen Henning of Greenville, S. C., Calvin and June Henning of Waukon, Robert and Dorothy Henning of Ossian; two daughters-in-law, Norma Henning of Waukon and Charlotte Henning of Decorah. Also surviving are 48 grandchildren, 94 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 25, 1996 at Salem United Church of Christ with Rev. Jack Frohn officiating. Casket bearers were Lyle Henning, David Lawson, Daniel Henning, Leslie Henning, Ronald Henning, Donald Koenig, John Opfer and Lynn Henning. Honorary casket bearers were all other grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Martin Funeral Home of Waukon. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
