Contributor: Connie (Kelly) Ellis - (Kelly/Robey Family Researcher)The sudden death of Orange "Ora" Brace Kelly on Wednesday, May 2, 1945 shocked and saddened his many acquaintances in Waukon, Iowa and vicinity. He had been busily engaged about his home on West Court Street during the day, but was stricken with a heart attack in the early evening, passing away about 10:00 p.m.
Ora was the son of John Ora and Jane Wave (Lewis) Kelly on December 28, 1868 in Jefferson Township in Allamakee County, Iowa. After attaining manhood, he engaged in farming near Rossville, Iowa until in September 1922 when he and his family made their home in Waukon, Iowa.
On December 28, 1892 his marriage to Miss Edith M. Robey took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Robey in Waukon, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children: Merwyn Kelly of Jefferson Township, Clinton Kelly of Franklin Township, and Sadie Belle (Mrs. Lee) Bloxham, of Hay Springs, Nebraska, who with their mother, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband, father, and grandfather. There are seven grandchildren to mourn his loss in addition to a brother, John Vernon Kelly of Cottonwood, Minnesota and a sister, Hester Olive (Mrs. Seldon) Leas of Kalamazoo, Michigan, who are also saddened by his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ida May Leas, Jessie F. Brace, and two brothers, Emmett Benner Kelly, who died as a young boy and Levi Kelly, who died as an infant. The remains reposed at the home of the deceased until Saturday afternoon, May 5, when services were held at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. A. H. Grossheim. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery. The pallbearers were John Rumph, John Larkin, Reuben Frink, Howard and Louis Theis, and Cullen Henderson.
Relatives from a distance in attendance at the services were Mrs. Bert Robey Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mrs. Hazel Leas, Slayton, Minnesota, Lowell Koontz and his sister, Mrs. Bess Luky, of Wolf Lake, Indiana, Messers, and Mmes, Leslie Mundt, Ossian, Iowa, Keith Kelly of Oelwein, Iowa, Herbert Graham of Prosper, Minnesota, and Mrs. Clarence Steele and son of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
Note: Orrie's death date is incorrectly listed in the obituary of his wife, Edith Mary (Robey) Kelly. That obituary said he died on June 1, 1945.
