Contributor: Connie (Kelly) Ellis - (Kelly Family Researcher)This community was shocked and deeply saddened last Wednesday, November 22, 1944, upon learning of the accidental death of Daniel Kelly,age 78, resulting from a fall down the hay chute in his barn in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa.
Dan was the son of William Morton and Sarah (Lewis) Kelly. He was born January 13, 1866 on the farm in Paint Creek Township where he spent his life. He never married. After attaining manhood, he engaged in farming. He was regarded as one of the most prosperous and progressive farmers in his home vicinity. He was honest and upright in his business dealings and held the respect of his fellow-men.
Dan's sister, Nettie, also never married and they were the caretakers of the family farm. In 1913 they took in two orphan boys from the New York Children's Aid Society, Walter and Gilbert Eadie. The boys were given parental care and trained to become good citizens. Walter died in 1937 of multiple sclerosis but Gilbert remains on the Kelly farm with his wife Gladys and children. Other survivors include a brother, Jess Lewis Kelly of Paint Creek Township and a sister Martha "Mattie" (Mrs. A.H.) Gast of Nora Springs, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Nettie Wilton Kelly in 1938, Mary Campbell, Alice Campbell, Emily Kelly at the age of 3, and his brothers, Frederick Kelly, William Harvey Kelly, Moore Kelly at the age of 2, and Bennert Kelly at the age of 1.
Funeral services were held at the Rossville Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon, November 25, conducted by Rev. A. H. Grossheim, pastor of the church. Music was provided by Mrs. Floyd Larson and Mrs. Jess Toney, accompanied by Robert Engrav. Mr. Kelly was laid to rest in the Rossville Cemetery beside his two sisters, Nettie and Alice. The pallbearers were Robert McGeough, James Barlow, Robert McNally, Levi Huffman, Ora Mitchell, and Walter Gast.
