Dale Hoofnagle

Dale Ralph Hoofnagle, age 84, of rural Waukon, and formerly of Waterloo, passed to his heavenly home Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at his home surrounded by his wife and family after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 26 at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home in Waterloo. Burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full Military Honors were accorded by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138, Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 10 following worship services at the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon.
Dale was born April 8, 1926 in Waterloo, the son of Ralph L. and Minnie E. (Hollister) Hoofnagle. He grew up in Waterloo and attended local schools. Dale joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served for four years, earning many ribbons and the Bronze Star.
Dale was united in marriage with Laurene A. Harken June 12, 1949 in Jesup. During their 47 years of marriage, Dale and Laurene enjoyed fishing and hunting together, spending many hours on the Mississippi River. Laurene preceded him in death March 5, 1996. Dale later renewed his acquaintance with an old friend and he was united in marriage with Beulah “Bea” Derifield September 28, 1996 in Selah, WA.
In 1947, Dale began a 42-year career as an electrician at Rath Packing Co. Following the closure of Rath, he worked at Tama Packing Co. until retiring in 1992. Dale also owned and operated a small electrical business. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon and a life member of the American Legion, VFW and the AMVETS.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah “Bea” Hoofnagle of rural Waukon; a son, Larry (Merry) Hoofnagle of Lansing; a daughter, Marilyn Hoofnagle of Waterloo; a great-grandson, Sean; a brother, Wayne (Theresa) Hoofnagle of Waterloo; 10 stepchildren, Cindy (John) Runnels, Jennifer (Joe) Miles, and Margreet (Neil) Derifield, all of Texas, Laura Huff of Waterloo, Catherine Short, Jeff Derifield, Dick Ortiz, and Lee Derifield, all of Washington State, and Curtis and Jerry Derifield, both of California; 14 step-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to Pancreatic Cancer research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
