Vernon O'Riley
Vernon E. O’Riley, LCDR USN RET, passed away March 18, 2011 in Prescott, AZ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 25 at Noon at St. Germaine Catholic Church in Prescott Valley, AZ. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Heritage Memory Gardens.
He was born October 29, 1924 in Skidmore, MO to Fred and Hildred O’Riley. He spent his early years in Waukon. Vernon is credited with 27 years of Naval Service from 1944-1971 during WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
In addition to coaching the “All-Navy Basketball Champions" on the USS Intrepid, he also coached high school and college basketball in Waukon and Great Bridge, VA. He was a PGA Golf Professional in Nebraska, Kansas, and Arizona. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and his Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, CA.
Vernon is survived by his beloved wife, Maxine; his six children, Janice, Michael (Lisa Lynn), Gary (Connie), Kevin, Lisa (Matthew), and Robert; his sisters, Elizabeth, Colleen, and Joyce; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
