Waukon resident Ella L. Smith, age 86, was buried in St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church Cemetery Tuesday, November 12 following the 9 a.m. funeral services which were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Hansen's Funeral Home handled arrangements. Pallbearers were Phil Stone, Reggie Curtin, Pat McCauley, Harry Meyer, Bob Curtin, and Bud Campbell.

Ella died Sunday, November 10, 1985 at Veterans Memorial Hospital. A teacher and seamstress, she was born in Allamakee County, September 10, 1899, the daughter of Charles and Katie (McCauley) Smith. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was active in the Rosary Society.

There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by three sisters; Mary C. Smith who later became Sister Mary Justine, Margaret Smith, and Veronica Smith.

Note of the transcriber: The Smith sisters, Ella, Veronica, and Margaret lived together in their house which was located on the North side of Waukon. For their living they sewed clothing for many local women. In their later years, they preferred to just do altering work but if you were a good customer, they would still make clothing for special occasions. In addition to being very talented with a needle and thread, they also were very good bakers. Their home always had the aroma of freshly made bread, cookies, pies, or cakes.
