Vincent Bakewell Body Recovered On Friday

The writeup of the tragic death of Vince Bakewell in last week's paper was critically misrepresented. The following item is written to account for the errors.
The body of Vincent Bakewell, farmer who resided two miles south of New Albin, and who had been missing since Thursday night, September 30, 1943, was found late Friday afternoon in the Iowa River about 100 rods from. his home by Ranger Jule Frericks of Lansing, who was accompanied by Lawrence Bakewell, a brother of the deceased, who also resided on a farm in the same vicinity.
Vincent Bakewell had driven his tractor to New Albin Thursday evening with the intention of getting some repair work done. He returned home at 10:40
p. m. and took his coon dog and left with the intention of training him for the hunting season, which he had mentioned about doing earlier that evening.
Due to the fact he did not return home, his family became alarmed and started looking for him. On Saturday and Sunday neighbors and friends from far and near under the supervision of Deputy Sheriff R. J. Waters of Waukon, with the aid of Game Warden George Kaufman and Federal Ranger Jule Frericks and the Boy Scouts searched the islands and woods in the vicinity of his home. On Sunday evening the Brooks Bloodhounds of La Crosse arrived to aid in the search. They tracked him up the highway toward New Albin, losing his trail within a few rods of the town limits. From that theory it was believed he had been picked up by a car. No trace had been found until his body was discovered in the river On Friday.
Vincent Bakewell was born on January 22, 1908 in Lansing township, and received his education at the I. C. high school in Lansing. On May 29, 1934, he was married to Miss Veronica Schulte at Dorchester, Iowa. He is survived by his wife and four children, namely, Eileen 8, Genevieve' 5. Donald 3, and Norbert 1 year,. also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Bakewell and three brothers, Lawrence, New Albin; Joseph, Waukon; John in the U. S. army stationed in Panama, and a sister, Miss Anastacia of St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in
death by a sister, Mrs. Mary Robertson.
Mr. Bakewell was a kindhearted loving husband and father. He was a good neighbor, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Joseph's Catholic church with the Rev. L. Hayes, pastor, officiating, and burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery west of town. Casket bearers were: John C. Schulte. Clem Hitchens, Freeman Meyer, Harold Roerkohl, Clarence Schulte and Peter Colsch.
The funeral was attended by many relatives and friends and will long be remembered as one of the largest funerals held at New Albin.-Contributed.
