Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Alice Iverna Stone, age 61, of Waukon, Iowa died Thursday, September 17, 1987 at St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Funeral services were held Monday September 21 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Lynn Groe officiated. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Jeremy and Eric Stone, Raymond Watson, Gordon and Bill Steffenson, and Gary Gerleman.
Alice was born April 2, 1926 in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa to Selmer A. and Catherine J.(Johnson) Steffenson. She attended rural country schools, Lansing High School and nurses training at Allegan, Michigan. On October 13, 1945 she married Thomas Stone at St. John's parsonage in Waukon, Iowa. She was a lifetime area resident, a member of St. John's Church where she was active in ALCW, and the VFW auxiliary. She was a past president of both organizations. She had been an LPN at Veterans Memorial Hospital and a cook at Waukon Schools. She also baked pastries for individuals and restaurants. Her specialty was lefse during the holidays.
She was preceded in death by a sister Marlys and her parents.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas; 3 sons, Darrell Stone of Waukon, Iowa, Wayne Stone of Lansing, Iowa, and Timothy Stone of New Albin, Iowa; 5 daughters, Mary Stone of Waukon, Iowa, Kathryn Giese of Alma Center, Wisconsin, Mrs. Steve (Rita) Kunkle of Oelwein, Iowa, Mrs. Gary (Linda) Gerleman of Chester, Virginia, and Mrs. Joe (Lori) Becker of Lansing, Iowa; 22 grandchildren and 2 brothers, Melvin Steffenson of Waukon, Iowa and Walter Steffenson of Rochester, Minnesota.
