The Rev. Thomas Hancock Campbell, 77, of Hinesville, Ga., formerly of Dubuque, and Waukon, Iowa, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in Georgia, following a brief illness with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery priest's section, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. The Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon, is in charge of arrangements.

At the time of his death, Father Campbell was associate chaplain at the Chapel at Fort Stewart, Our Lady of Victory Parish, and the Winn Army Hospital in Hinesville. He was also associate chaplain at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga.

He was born on April 18, 1926, in Waukon, son of Leonard and Hazel Campbell.

He attended St. Patrick's School; Waukon Public School; and Loras College, Dubuque, from 1960 to 1962. He received his master's degree in religion from Sacred Heart Monastery, Hales Corner, Wis., 1974-1979.

His ordination to the priesthood was on June 7, 1980, at the Cathedral, Savannah, by Bishop Raymond Lessard.

He was assigned to the following parishes: St. Joseph Church, Macon, Ga.; St. Joseph Church, Jesup, Ga.; St. Christopher Church, Bagley, Ga.; St. Ann Church and Pucelli Catholic School, both in Columbus, Ga.; and Blessed Sacrament Church, Savannah.

Before his ordination, he taught at the following schools in Iowa: St. Joseph's, Marion; St. John, Independence; Holy Ghost, Dubuque; and St. Patrick's, Waukon.

Father Campbell loved all, adults and children, and would hope for your prayers for his salvation.

Surviving are his adopted mother, Betty Hancock, of Hinesville; three brothers, James (Maxine), of Waukon, Paul (Rita), of Overland Park, Kan., and Charles (Shari), of North Liberty; four sisters, Mary (Dale) Goltz and Esther, both of Waukon, Barbara (Emmett) Magner, of Cedar Rapids, and Margaret (Tony) Corneliuson, of Hopkins, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Hazel Campbell; four brothers, Michael, Mark, William and John; and two sisters, Hazel Burke and Kathryn Mohwinkle.
