Michael Sweeney of Waukon, Iowa, a resident of Northgate Care Center, died there on Sunday, July 28, 1985. He was 95 years of age. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Waukon, Iowa on Tuesday, July 30 at 10 a.m. with burial in the Lycurgus Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Jan, Jerry, and Jack Sweeney, Tom Schofield, Terry Kelly, Wayne Henderson, Wayne Smorstad, and Scott Anderson. Hanson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The son of Antony and Elizabeth (McCroden) Sweeney, he was born October 14, 1889 in Allamakee County, Iowa. A Lycurgus area farmer, he married Rose Quillen on June 15, 1915 at the Lycurgus Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; a daughter, Helen Smorstad, and two sons, Ralph Sweeney and Leonard Sweeney; 2 sisters, Mary Welch and Anna McCabe, and 3 brothers, James Sweeney, Peter Sweeney, and Tony Sweeney.

He is survived by 4 daughters, Cecilia Schofield of Waukon, Iowa, Rosella Henderson of Monona, Iowa, Darlene Anderson of Waterville, Iowa and Evelyn Fossum of Marion, Iowa; a son Ray Sweeney of Waukon, Iowa; 56 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn Needham of Waukon, Iowa and 2 brothers Hugh Sweeney of Waukon, Iowa and William Sweeney of Dubuque, Iowa.
