Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Ida Smith, age 99, a Good Samaritan Center resident since 1980, died Saturday April 12, 1986 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, in Waukon, Iowa. Services were held Tuesday, April 15 at 2:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial was in Old East Paint Creek Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Raymond Odegard, Gerhard Gabrielson, Otto Ruen, Truman Wurtzel, Norman Thorsen, and George Mueller. Honorary pallbearers were Morris Svendson, Alvin Thompson, James Bristol, and James Thomson.
Ida was born December 27, 1886 in Center Township of Allamakee County, Iowa to Iver and Randi (Markegaard) Thorson. She received a Normal School education and was a rural school teacher for several years. She married Jack S. Smith in 1922. He died in 1937. She attended business college and worked in the law office of Jacobson, Bristol and Thomson for 17 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Normandia Club, Women's Civic Club, Allamakee County Historical Society, and the Waukon Senior Citizen's Club. She also performed as a vocalist, both as a soloist and in ensembles.
Preceding her in death were her husband, 3 brothers, Theodore Thorson, Ole Thorson, and one in infancy; and 3 sisters, Mrs. B.T.(Elise) Gilbertson, Mrs. O.A. (Barbara) Odegard, and Clara Thorson.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Lee A. Smith of Midland, Michigan; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
