John Bakewell 1915-1993

John M. Bakewell, 77, died Saturday, March 13, 1993 at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 16 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Clermont with the Rev. Donald Bakewell and the Rev. Roger Katz officiating. Burial, with military rites by Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post 375 of Clermont, was in the church cemetery. Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont in charge of arrangements.
He was born June 18. 1915 near Lansing to Michael and Theresa (Morgan) Bakewell and attended Immaculate Conception School in Lansing. He farmed with his parents a short time before entering the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Oct. 12, 1944 he and Joycelyn Engle were married at St. Peter's. After his discharge from the Army, they purchased a produce and feed business in Clermont which they operated for 20 years. In 1965 he was employed by Valley Co-op, retiring in 1980. During this time they owned and operated the Clermont Gift and Sundries shop.
He was a member of St. Peter's; a 48-year member of Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post #375; a 40-year member of Catholic Order of Foresters, and an AA member for 18 years.
Surviving are his wife; a son John of Eden Prairie. MN; two daughters, Jacquelyn Bakewell of La Crosse, WI and Junanne Bakewell of Minneapolis, MN; a granddaughter; a sister, Stacia Quillen of La Crosse, and three sisters-in-law, Gladys Bakewell of New Albin, Luella Bakewell of Waukon and Vernice Svendsen of Lawler.
He was preceded in death by a sister Mary Robinson; three brothers, Vincent, Lawrence and Joseph; a sister-in-law, Veronica Bakewell, and a brother-in-law, Reuben Svendsen.
Casket bearers were Norbert, Duane, Robert, Kenneth, Ralph and Jim Bakewell.
Honorary bearers were Earl Lehmann, Robert Schmitt, Kelly,Wallander. Allan Johnson, Tom Luhman, Lyle Gunderson, Darrell Bushman and Dave Solehim.

Memorial Service

John Michael Bakewell, son of Michael William and Theresa (Morgan) Bakewell, was born June 18, 1915 on a farm near Lansing, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, March 13, 1993 in Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He had reached the age of 77 years, 8 months and 25 days.
He attended the Immaculate Conception School in Lansing, Iowa. John farmed with his parents a short time and then served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On October 12, 1944 he was married to Joycelyn Marilyn Engle in St. Peter's Catholic Church at Clermont, Iowa. To this union three children were born. After his discharge from the Army, John and Joycelyn purchased a produce and feed business in Clermont, which they operated for 20 years. In 1965 he was employed by the Valley Co-op for 15 years. John retired in 1980. During this time they owned and operated the Clermont Gift and Sundries shop.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Robinson, 3 brothers, Vincent, Lawrence and Joseph Bakewell, sister-in-law, Veronica Bakewell, brother-in-law, Reuben Svendsen, niece, Sister M. Genette, 2 nephews, Larry and Ronald Bakewell, and grand -nephew, Steve Bakewell.

Surviving are his wife, Joycelyn, to whom he has been married for 48 years, a son, John Bakewell and his wife, Deborah, of Eden Prairie, MN, 2 daughters, Jacquelyn Bakewell of LaCrosse, WI and Junanne Bakewell of Minneapolis, MN; a granddaughter, Christine Marie Bakewell, whom he dearly loved; 1 sister, Stacia and her husband, DeVoinne Quillen, of LaCrosse, WI; 3 sisters-in-law, Gladys Bakewell of New Albin, IA, Luella Bakewell of Waukon and Vernice Svendsen of Lawler, IA; 19 nephews and nieces and a host of grand nieces and nephews.

John was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Clermont, the Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post No. 375 for 48 years, the Catholic Order of Foresters for 40 years and an AA member for 18 years.

"John was a man who dearly loved his church, home and family. Especially after his retirement in 1980, he spent many hours working in his flower garden and enjoyed feeding and watching the birds that came to his back lawn as each season changed. At the time of his death, he was preparing for the arrival of the Martins, birds that return in the Spring. One special joy of his retirement was the visits of his granddaughter, Christine, who celebrated her second birthday two weeks ago at "Grandpa's house." It was one of the precious moments that they spent together."
