Alphonso P. Coon 1856-1929

COON, CHURCH, VANGORDER

Alphonzo P. Coon, aged 72 years, five months and
two days, died Saturday evening, February 2nd, at
the home of his niece, Mrs. C. W. Church in this
city.

Mr. Coon was born in 1856 near Luana, Clayton
County, Iowa, where he lived until 1909 when he
and his aged mother came west and both made final
proof on homesteads located about six miles north-west of Murdo. After returning to the old home in Iowa. Later on Mr. Coon and his mother and the C. W. Church family moved to the state of Maryland where they lived for ten years, after which they returned to Iowa for a short time and then again returned to Murdo about nine years ago.

Since then Mr. Coon has made his home with the Church family at Murdo. Two years ago last October Mr. Coon was stricken with paralysis, which left him practically helpless although part of the time he was able to be around
until last fall he seemed to be getting weaker and two and a half months ago he became entirely
helpless.

Mr. Coon had been a faithful member of the
United Brethren church ever since he was a young
man. He was a Sunday school superintendent for
over 12 years and active in church work until his
health failed him.

The remains arrived in Postville last Thursday
night and were taken to the Schutte undertaking
rooms and on Saturday afternoon brief services were held at the funeral parlors, Rev. D. F. Myers of the United Brethren church officiating. Interment in the family plot at the Hardin cemetery where lie the remains of his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Note: His grave is not marked. Mrs. Church was Gertrude Van Gorder, daughter of Mary Coon and Jason Van Gorder.
