Joseph L. Mahr, 79, of South Sioux City, formerly of Van Horne, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services were held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Albensius officiating. Burial with military graveside services will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, rural South Sioux City. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
Joseph L. Mahr was born February 16, 1923, in Dorchester, Iowa, the son of Walter J. and Mary (Schwartzhoff) Mahr. He was a US Army veteran of World War II. He married Lois E. Schulze on February 8, 1947, in Cedar Rapids. The couple had been long time residents of the Siouxlands area. He was an independent insurance agent.
Joseph was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Father Trecy Council Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Northeast Sportsman Association. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lyle M. (Patricia) Mahr, South Sioux City, and Larry J. (Laury) Mahr, Dakota City; a daughter Linda M. Miller, Hinton, Iowa; three brothers Reginold (Evelyn) Mahr, Vinton, Eugene (Judy) Mahr, Lime Springs, Walter (Marianne) Mahr, Dorchester; two sisters, Lou Mae Ryan, DuBois, Penn., and Margie (Ole) Ohrstrom, Rock Island, Ill.; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond; and two sisters, Genevieve Herbert Wilson and Madeline Schwartzhoff.
