Evelyn Mahr, age 83, of Vinton, died June 30, 2002, at Virginia Gay Hospital following an extended illness. Services were held Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Vinton, with Rev. Joseph McGuire celebrating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Overton-Van Steenhuyse Funeral Home, Vinton, was in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn Casey was born January 16, 1919, at LaCrosse, Wis., to Michael and Mary (Waters) Casey. She was raised and attended school near New Albin.
On February 22, 1938, she married Reginald Mahr in New Albin. The couple farmed near Dorchester before moving to Van Horne in the early 1950s and Vinton in 1962. Evelyn worked as a nurse's aide at Virginia Gay Hospital for ten years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society and enjoyed reading and fishing in her spare time.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters and brothers, grandson Jake Mahr, and son-in-law Jack Parr.
Survivors include her husband, Reginald "Bud" Mahr, Vinton; four sons, Lowell (Mary Ellen) Mahr, Vinton, Kenneth (Linda) Mahr, Shellsburg, James (Kathy) Mahr, Grants Pass, Ore., and Brett (Lois) Mahr, Cedar Rapids; six daughters, Janice Parr, Joanne (Lyle) Ternus, and Marilyn (Marv) Hite, all of Vinton, and Maxine Braasch, Kathy Lea, and Cynthia (Bryan) Lower, all of Cedar Rapids; twenty-six grandchildren; and thirty-eight great-grandchildren.
