Chas. H. Krumm, Dies Suddenly at His Home Sunday
_______Was Prominent in Insurance Circles and as Former Hog Breeder
_______Charles H. Krumm, one of the old and highly respected residents of this city was suddenly summoned last Sunday after being stricken with car-[--] apoplexy.
Charles H. Krumm was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, Sept. 6, 1860, to John and Caroline (Freel) Krumm, and died at his home in this city on Sunday, August 4, 1929, at about four o’clock p. m., aged 68 years, eleven months and two days.
In early infancy he was baptized and in later years confirmed in the Lutheran church of his native city. He received the education that fitted him for the duties of life in Germany and for a year attended college with [--] view of entering the ministry. However, when he was about eighteen years of age his father emigrated to America and Charles decided to give up his plans and accompany his father to the land of promise, the family settling in Clayton county.
On January 16, 1882, Charles was married to Miss Minnie Schierholz of Garnavillo. This union was blessed with six children, three of whom preceded their father in death.
The family resided on a farm near Postville until 1915, when they moved to Postville, where Mr. Krumm entered in the real estate and insurance business, in both of which he was as eminently successful as he had been in the conduct of his farm.
He was an industrious, energetic farmer and successful business man, a loyal citizen, always seeking to promote the interest of his home city [--] community, where he built a number of fine homes. He had wit and a gentle sarcasm and was popular among his fellows, a man perfectly at home in every company, and he could make a man feel at home with him.
Fraternally he was affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, holding membership in Brotherly Love Lodge No. [--] A. F. & A. M. of this city, and in [--]ty Chapter No. 62, R. A. M., also [--] this city. He also held membership in Langridge Commandery, K. [--] of West Union and with the Shrine [--] Cedar Rapids.
Religiously he held to the Lutheran church, of which his family are all members, and contributed to its support.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Mrs. Alice F. Schmidt of [--]ona, Wis.; Mrs. Minnie Nordin of this city, and Mrs. Effie Lammert of near Postville, and four grandchildren. Also by two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Potas and Mrs. Dora Hefner, both of Chester, S. D., as well as by numerous other relatives and many friends.
The funeral was held from the Lutheran church at two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. T. Finck, who spoke both in English and German. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful and a large attendance of sympathizing friends amply attested the high place he held in the community which had been his home for many years.
Interment was made in Postville cemetery, the Masonic fraternity conducting the service at the grave, R. R. Douglass of this city officiating for the local lodge.
