Gretchen Marie Meyer, the daughter of William and Emma (Wegner) Everman, was born December 20, 1916, in Allamakee County, near Postville, Iowa. She passed away Saturday, April 6, 2002, at her home in East Park Terrace, Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 85 years, three months, and 16 days.

She was baptized June 9, 1917 by Pastor Schmidt and confirmed August 24, 1930 by Pastor Garten, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Gretchen graduated from Postville High School in 1934.

On November 6, 1936 Gretchen was married to Clinton Meyer in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. To this union a daughter, Bonnie, was born. They farmed in Post Township, north of Postville, until they retired in 1975 and moved to Postville.

Gretchen helped her husband with the farm work and put in a large garden as well. They often took time off to go fishing, which she enjoyed. After their retirement, they traveled around the United States on bus tours and also took a trip to Germany. They also collected and restored antique furniture. Gretchen learned to quilt in her later years and made several quilts for her family. She enjoyed her grandchildren so much and was happy that she was able to see her great grandson as well.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clinton, who died in 1991, a brother, Clifford, a sister, Marie (Harry) Davis, a sister-in-law, Betty Everman, brothers-in-law, Hubert Mounce, and Robert (Irma) Meyer, and nephews, Randy Everman and Robert Meyer, Jr.

Surviving is her daughter, Bonnie (Walter) Fong, of White Lake, Michigan, two grandchildren, Jason Fong of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, a granddaughter, Wendy (Chris) Van Wert of Canton, Michigan, one great grandson, Max Van Wert, two brothers, Clarence (Ramona) Everman and Harold Everman, all of Postville, three sisters, Florence (Gordon) Lawson and Pauline Everman, both of Postville, and Irene Mounce of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Helen (Roland) Gray, of Postville; and many nieces and nephews.

Gretchen was a life time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a member of the Women of the ELCA. She was a charter member of the Post Franklin Study Club, which began in 1936. The land that became Meyer Park on the north side of Postville was donated by Gretchen so that the children living nearby would have a place to play.
