Esther E. Meyer

Funeral services for Esther E. Meyer were held Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Casket bearers were grandsons Randall and Gregory Nelson, Charles C. Fett, Michael and Steven Boleyn and Daniel and Darren Westendorf.

Esther Ernestine Emma Meyer, the daughter of Henry William and Elizabeth Anna (Harnack) Block, was born March 16, 1913, in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville, Iowa. She passed away Friday, January 25, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 88 years, nine months, and nine days.

Esther was baptized June 8, 1913, by the Reverend R. Kuhne and confirmed August 16, 1925, by the Reverend E. T. Finck, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. She attended the Grand Meadow Township country school near Postville.

On June 24, 1936 Esther was married to Gilbert Henry Meyer by the Reverend R. B. Garten in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. To this union four daughters were born. They farmed in Henderson Prairie Township from 1936 until 1949, when they moved to Postville. Esther was employed as a cook at the Postville Schools from 1959 until her retirement in 1975. Esther moved into the Grand Meadow Glen congregate living complex in 2001. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on December 3, 2001

Esther was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA and also the Rebekkah Lodge.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gilbert, who died in 1986, a grandson, Jeffrey Lynn Nelson, two brothers, Lawrence (Hulda) Block, and Emil Block.

Surviving are her four daughters, Marilyn (Henry) Nelson, of Oelwein, IA, Dorothy (Charles) Fett, of Rockton, IL, Gretchen (Roger) Boleyn, of Elgin, IA, and Dianne (Dennis) Westendorf, of Mt. Horeb, WI, 11 grandchildren, Randall (Joanne) Nelson, Gregory (Traci) Nelson, Barbara (Mike) Nelson Hernandez; Marsha (Paul) Fett Christensen, Angela Fett (Jeff) Pheneger, Charles C. Fett; Michael (Joan) Boleyn, Deborah (Terry) Boleyn Ford, Steven (Theresa) Boleyn; and Daniel Westendorf and Darren Westendorf; and 18 great grandchildren.
