Mary M. Hammel, 82, died Friday, May 12, 1995 at her home in Waukon.
Born Jan. 2, 1913 in Dorchester, she was the daughter Bernard "Ben" and Mary Elizabeth (Roerkahl) Schulte. She attended the "Dutch Hill" rural grade school, graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia, MN and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette.
She taught at the rural "Bee" School near Dorchester for several years before her marriage to Francis Hammel Aug. 25, 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester. They lived in Decorah for a year before moving to Waukon in 1943.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and it's Rosary Society, Little Theresa's Study Group and other groups. Mary helped in the family business, Hammel Jewelers.
Surviving are her husband, three daughters and their husbands,Janice and Ron Rolle of Grand Rapids, MN; Joanne and Ralph Larson of Waukon and Sharon and Bob Monaghan of Winthrop, and four sons, Joe of Waukon, Frank and wife Sharon of Frankville, Gerald and Sheryl of Denver, and Gary and Kari of Waukon.
Also surviving are a brother Theodore and wife Leonedes Schulte of Dorchester; five sisters, Luella Bakewell of Waukon, Lucille Thompson, Marcella and husband Tony Albertia and Leona Doviak, all of Milwaukee, WI and Anna Klemz of Warren, MI and 19 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Mary, a sister Veronica Bakewell and a grandson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15 at St. Patrick's with the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Ed Lechtenberg and Father Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers were Derek, Darin, Kristin and Brad Rolle; Bob Jr. , John and Michelle Monaghan; Laura, Susan, Eric and Amy Larson; Beth, Joseph, Jennifer, Sarah, Jamie, Christie, Jason and Jeff Hammel.
Honorary bearers were members of the Little Thersa Study Club; Jeanne Blocker, Rita Burke, Alice Connor, Frances Foley, Mary Mauss, Mary Mohn, Doris Cunningham, Margaret Regan, Beatrice Welch, Grace Murphy, Anna Mae Curtin, Mary Mettille and Celia Howes.
A memorial fund has been established.
