Mrs. Jane Hale

We are pilgrims upon earth and our journey of life is swiftly run. "The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they are four score years, yet is their strength, labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away." And thus from our midst the angel of death has summoned another one of the old settlers who had made her home with us for over seventy years.
Mrs. Hale, nee Jane Ann Smith, was born at Millhall, Penn, Nov. 10, 1831 and with her parents moved to Illinois in 1846. She was united in marriage to Francis B. Hale, July 22, 1851, and they established their home in Lansing. To this union were born two children, Clara J. and Frank Lincoln.
Her husband, who was a soldier in the Union army, died July 2nd, 1864, and her son Frank, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, also preceded her in death June 22, 1895.
There lives to mourn her departure, her daughter, Clara J. of Lansing, and one brother Jackson Smith of Waukon, besides many friends and acquaintances.
Mrs. Hale died April 4, 1922, at the age of 90 years, 4 months, and 25 days. For the last seventy two years she had made her home in Lansing, and for more than fifty years she was a member of the First Presbyterian church of this city. Always cheerful and bright, though shut in for more than fifteen years, she has been an example of patience and Christian fortitude to all those who came in contact with her, and though her body is laid at rest her spirit and influence will long abide to inspire and encourage those who are in like affliction with her.
