Death of Clara J. Hale

The death of Miss Clara J. Hale took place Sunday afternoon at 6:45 at the home in this city of her cousins, Boyd W., Miss Theo and Miss Ethel Smith. During a long period of ill health, the last six months of which she was confined to her bed and in the care of a trained nurse, she was tenderly cared for by her cousins and everything possible done for her relief, but without avail.
Clara J. Hale was born in Center township, this county, Oct. 22, 1854. She was the daughter of Francis B. and Jennie A. Hale,. Her father was a civil war soldier and died in the service. With her mother and brother she made her home in Lansing. In early life she learned the millinery trade, joined the First Presbyterian church and was later employed at retouching in a photograph gallery at Lansing. When her brother and mother died, the latter in 1922, she came to the Jackson Smith home in Waukon, where she lived a very retired life.
With Rev. H.H. Temple, pastor of the Methodist church officiating, funeral services were held at the Smith home Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and the remains were taken to Lansing for burial in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery.
