Funeral services for Ashley LaVelle, 86, were held Saturday, Dec. 22, 1984 at 11 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral home in Postville. The Rev. Reuben Tjaden officiated. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

Ashley William LaVelle, son of William and Celia (Russell) LaVelle, was born July 21, 1898 near Postville Junction in Winneshiek County. He died Dec. 19 at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville. He attended the rural schools in the Postville Junction area. As a young man he was interested in developing hybrid seedcorn.

Nov. 30, 1921 he was married to Barbara M. Steffans at Clermont. To this union four children were born. They lived in the Postville and Frankville areas where he was employed as a farm laborer. One of his interests was creating tools useful in building fences.

In 1971 they moved to Postville. Ashley worked as a carpenter and built fences for local farmers until he retired in 1973.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harry and Ralph and three sisters, Thelma LaVelle, Ehtyl Mattie and Esther Riser.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, a son, Robert A. of Edgerton, WI; three daughters, Winnifred B. Meeker and Darlene M. Cox, both of Cedar Rapids, and Alvera M. LaVelle of LaGrange, IL, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two sisters, Ruth Sires, Waterloo and Phyllis LaForm of California.
