Barbara Marie LaVelle, daughter of Richard and Mary Anna Steffans, was born March 16, 1902, in Winneshiek County, near Castalia, Iowa. She died March 7, 1994 in Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah. She was 91.

She attended the Larabee School in Clermont, Iowa. On Nov. 30, 1921, she married Ashley William LaVelle at Clermont. To this union, four children were born. They lived in the Postville and Frankville areas. In 1971 they moved to their present home in Postville. Barbara had worked as a telephone operator in Frankville for 17 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ashley, who died Dec. 18, 1984; four brothers, William Henry Steffans, Andrew Phillip Steffans, Frank M. Steffans and Phillip Richard Steffans; and a sister, Marguerite Steffans.

Survivors are one son, Robert A. (Pauline) LaVelle of Edgerton, Wis.; three daughters, Winnifred B. (Kenneth) Meeker and Darlene M. Cox, all of Cedar Rapids, and Alvera M. LaVelle of LaGrange, Ill.; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

Funeral services for Barbara LaVelle were held Friday, March 11, 1994 at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, the Rev. Reuben Tjaden officiating. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Bobby, David, Jason and Danny LaVelle, Brian Reddman and Donald Steffans.
