Mrs. J. Gass Passes On At Home Last Saturday
Mrs. Augusta Wilhelmina Gass, widow of the late Rev. J. J. Gass, passed away at her home south of Postville, Saturday, January 16, 1932, at 7:30 a.m.
She was the daughter of Bernhard and Johanna Borgelt and was born August 12, 1857. Having been baptized in infancy she was confirmed at the Lutheran church in Davenport, April 10, 1870.
On January 1, 1874, she was united in marriage to Rev. J. J. Gass, pastor of the First German Lutheran church of Davenport. To this union were born twelve children, six sons and six daughters, four daughters having died in early infancy.
In May 1882 Pastor Gass received a call from St. Paul's Lutheran church of Postville and the family moved to this city. In 1894 ill health forced her husband to retire from the active ministry and the family moved on a farm south of Postville, where they lived for sixteen years. In 1910 they built a new home immediately south of the city limits, which remained their home to the journey's end.
On Sunday, January 18, 1925, just seven years ago Monday, Rev. Gass passed on to his eternal reward, and the pall bearers who carried him to his last resting place are here today to perform a like service of love for the departed mother.
Mrs. Gass is survived by two daughters, Flora of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Hertha Erbe of this city; six sons, Edward, Walter, Roland, Herbert, Harold and Arthur, all of Postville; also by four grandchildren; and two brothers, Dr. George Borgelt of St. Louis, Mo., and Adolph Borgelt of Davenport.
At the time of her departure she was aged 74 years, five months and four days.
Agreeably to the wish of the deceased the funeral service was private, being held from the home at one o'clock p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, Dr. R. B. Garten, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city, officiating. Mrs. Leonard Casten and Miss Louise Kugel sang "Abide With Me" and "Christus der ist Mein Leben." Interment was made in the family plot in Postville cemetery.
The pall bearers were C. F. Meier, Fritz Schutte, W. C. Thoma, W. H. Oehring, Chas. Wegner and Frank Hangartner.
Mrs. Gass was known to all as a loving and faithful wife and mother, a good neighbor and true friend, whose life was devoted to her duty to God, her family and her home, and all who knew her will mourn her passing and sympathize sincerely with those bound to her by closer ties.
